28 September – General Władysław Anders establishes the Literary Institute in  Rome under the aegis of the 2nd Polish Corps. 

4 October – General Anders appoints Jerzy Giedroyc director of the Institute. Gustaw Herling-Grudziński as well as Zofia and Zygmunt Hertz are appointed to its staff.
