Witold Gombrowicz visits Jerzy Giedroyc when he comes to Europe after living in Argentina for 24 years. The Institute’s publications include Pierścień z papieru (The Paper Ring) by Zygmunt Haupt, Opowiadania (Short Stories) by Marek Hłasko, Polacy w ZSRR 1939–1942. Antologia (Poles in the USSR 1939–1942. An Anthology) by Maria Czapska, Klub Krzywego Koła (The Crooked Circle Club) by Witold Jedlicki, and Drugie przyjście oraz inne opowiadania i szkice (The Second Coming and Other Stories) by Gustaw Herling-Grudziński.
 
POLAND
Smallpox epidemic in Wrocław. Józef Franczak, the last Second World War anti-communist partisan, is apprehended and shot. Production of tractors at the Ursus plant exceeds 100,000.
 
WORLD
Hot line between Washington and Moscow is established. President Kennedy visits Berlin and states “Ich bin ein Berliner”. Later that year he is assassinated and Vice President Lyndon B. Johnson is sworn in as US president. Death of Pope John XXIII. Martin Luther King makes his iconic speech, “I Have a Dream”.
