Zygmunt Hertz dies at Maisons-Laffitte. An annual Zygmunt Hertz Literary Prize is instituted, together with an annual Juliusz Mieroszewski Prize for Journalism. The Institute’s publications include Etyka i poetyka (Ethics and Poetics) by Stanisław Barańczak, Ogród nauk (The Garden of Science) by Czesław Miłosz, and Porcja wolności – październik 1956 (A Portion of Freedom – October 1956) by M. Tarniewski (Jakub Karpiński).

POLAND
Attempt to blow up the Lenin statue in Nowa Huta. First visit of Pope John Paul II to Poland. The Young Poland Movement and the Confederation of an Independent Poland (KPN) are founded.

WORLD
Fall of the Pol Pot’s Khmer Rouge regime in Cambodia. Ayatollah Khomeini becomes the supreme leader of Iran. Margaret Thatcher becomes the prime minister of the United Kingdom. Soviet forces invade Afghanistan. Three Mile Island nuclear scare in the USA. Anthrax accidentally released from Soviet biological weapons facility in Szerdlovsk kills several hundred.
